“He’ll come around,” Aida said, shuffling from one foot to the other. Her lips were twisted, her eyes looking anywhere but at my face. “At least he let you through the gate.” She perked up at that, almost as if she’d been searching for something to reassure me with. Unfortunately for her, she’d failed.

“Yeah, but not past the doors,” I told her, standing in front of her and feeling like a damn stranger. I’d been in this house more than anywhere else on the planet. It was a second home to me—at times it even felt like my only home—but here I was, standing on the other side of the doors with Aida blocking entrance.

“You did sleep with his little sister,” a new voice said. I turned my head, just enough to see Mateo coming up beside me. I’d known he was out here, I just hadn’t known whereabouts. You weren’t part of a family like this one without having your wits about you at all times.

“I didn’t just sleep with her,” I ground out. It wasn’t a sordid relationship…although. I scrubbed my hand down my face. I supposed to them it was. But to me, it was so much more than that. She was so much more than that. “She’s more than that to me,” I echoed my thoughts.

“Doesn’t matter,” Mateo replied, straight to the point. “You betrayed him.”

I laughed, the sound condescending. I’d never gone against a fellow member of the organization, but he was getting on my last fuckin’ nerve. “And you think you’re so damn perfect, huh?” I turned away from Aida, knowing that there was no way I was getting past the door. Every fiber in me just wanted to explain it more to Lorenzo, but deep down I knew it wouldn’t help, not right now. Time healed all wounds, that was what people said, right?

“Never said I was,” he quipped back, his face blank.

“You think it though,” I gritted out. “You think Lorenzo doesn’t know that Luna wasn’t your fiancée before you claimed her as yours? You think he didn’t give you a pass?” I shook my head. “Every single fuckin’ one of you has been given a second chance.” I paused, feeling my rage flowing through me. I needed to tamp it down, but it felt like an impossible task right then. “Every one of you has crossed him and yet you’re still here, beside him.”

I held my arms up in the air, wincing as pain shot through my forearm. It had only been four days since the knife had been pierced through my flesh, so it was still strapped up thanks to the family doctor. He’d told me I should go to the hospital to get proper tests run to make sure that everything was fine, but I refused. He should have known better than to say shit like that to me.

I could still feel everything, so all it needed was stitches and time to heal.

“This isn’t about us.” Mateo stepped forward, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
